Scarlett

In 1996, a stray calico cat named Scarlett became a true legend in Brooklyn. When a fire broke out in an abandoned garage, she did the unthinkable — walking through flames five separate times to rescue each of her five kittens.

Even with her paws burned, fur singed, and eyes swollen shut, Scarlett gently touched each kitten with her nose to make sure they were all safe… then collapsed from exhaustion.

A firefighter brought them to safety. While one kitten didn’t survive, the rest recovered and were adopted into loving homes. Scarlett, the brave mother, was also adopted and lived a peaceful life for 13 more years.

Her courage inspired books, awards, and even an Animal Heroism Award named in her honor. Scarlett’s story is a powerful reminder of how deep a mother’s love can go — even through fire.
