A Rainy Day Episode

It was raining hard, but when I went to get an umbrella, I found out that all the five umbrellas we had at home were broken and needed repairing. I decided to take them to an umbrella-maker.

“I want these umbrellas to be repaired by evening”, said I to the umbrella-maker. “I’ll call for them on my way home”.

When I went to dine in the afternoon it was still raining very hard. I went to a restaurant, sat down at a table and in a few minutes a young woman came in and sat down at the same table with me. I was the first to finish dinner and when I got up, I absent-mindedly took her umbrella and started for the door. She saw me going away and called out to me reminding me that I had taken her umbrella. I asked her to excuse me and returned the umbrella to her.

In the evening I called for my umbrellas, bought a newspaper and got on a tram. The young woman was in the tram too. She looked at me and at my umbrellas and said, “You have had a successful day today, haven’t you?”.
